Education & Youth Issues Reporter

The Desert Sun/desertsun.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is looking for a reporter to cover education, youth, and childhood issues in Southern Californias Coachella Valley.

This area east of Los Angeles includes the communities of Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Palm Desert, Desert Hot Springs, Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Coachella, and Indio, and is bursting with amazing stories to chase and discover.

Education and issues relating to children and youth are of great interest to our core audiences. We are looking for a candidate with strong writing and source-building skills who wants to own this beat. Fluency in Spanish is a plus, as is prior experience covering education.

This job requires engaging not only with educators but also parents, students, taxpayers, local politicians, nonprofits and both public and private school administrators. A strong candidate will cover breaking news, provide smart enterprise, and feature coverage of broader trends, and develop watchdog projects that hold agencies and institutions accountable.

This reporter will also cover local colleges.

Responsibilities:

  • Reporting and writing stories that accurately inform and engage readers
  • Breaking news on the education beat
  • Producing a mix of daily, enterprise and in-depth articles.
  • Working toward becoming the communitys leading voice on topics of youth, school, and education.
  • Connecting with the community through storytelling and outreach (social media, on camera, forums, community leadership, etc.) Providing thoughtful analysis of complex issues.
  • Cultivating sources and keeping a pulse on the education beat in the Coachella Valley and surrounding areas.
  • Incorporating contemporary digital journalism tools in day-to-day reporting, including basic digital photo and video, social media, and other web-based journalism tools.
  • Learning and integrating new skills as they become relevant to our mission, in a cross-functional and highly collaborative newsroom.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or masters degree in communications, journalism, business, marketing or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2-5 years of reporting experience. Experience covering education, youth or children, and working with datasets and/or retrieving public records through the FOIA/CPRA process.
  • Reliably clear and compelling copy, whether with quick breaking news or in-depth investigations.
  • A thirst for stories behind the veneer.
  • Competence with digital journalism tools, like social media, internet-based research and digital publishing platforms.
  • Proficiency on social media platforms; including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Reddit.
  • Experience shooting and editing photos and video on an iPhone.
  • Strong communication skills, news judgement and headline-writing ability.
  • Ability to multitask and excel under intense deadline pressure.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and efficiently.
  • Strong writing, spelling and grammar skills; familiarity with AP style.
  • Fluency in English/Spanish is an advantage.
  • This role requires a valid drivers license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment, post-offer drug screen and background check.

We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, dont limit your upload to a resume; show us what youve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:

1. Your resume one to two pages.

2. A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job.

3. Links to 3-6 online samples of your work. Show us what youve produced or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do in your desired role.

It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
