News - Reporter/Public Safety

The Spartanburg Herald-Journal /goupstate.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK,is seeking a watchdog reporter to cover public safety in the city of Spartanburg and Spartanburg County.

Spartanburg is a growing city where over half of its citizensbelong to a racial minority. This is not a cops beat that writes stories straight from press releases. Our reporters are expected to develop community sources especially within under-served communities.

Breaking news, crime and courts will be part of this job, but the way we cover policing, criminal justice and our community must evolve, to hold law enforcement agencies accountable, seek a more nuanced representation of the challenges we face and rebuild trust with neglected communities in Spartanburg. We want our reporters to be out in the communities we cover.
Youll need to dig deeper, seek a wider perspectiveand cultivate diverse sources. Youll write about serious crime, scrutinize law enforcement tactics and spotlight social issues, while being sensitive to how our stories affect the people and neighborhoods we cover.

In a competitive news market, the Herald-Journal strives to be the first to inform readers with breaking news and analysis. This reporter is expected to file public records requests and mine data for enterprise storieson the public safety beat. This reporter also works closely with our county governmentand city reporters for story tips and ideas.

Spartanburg is part of the vibrant Upstate of South Carolina. Along with neighboring Greenville, it is the largest metro area in South Carolina. As of 2019 U.S. Census Bureau statistics, Spartanburg County is the 19th fastest-growing metropolitan area in the country.

  • Connects with the community through storytelling and outreach (social media, on camera, forums, community leadership, etc.)

  • Works with editors to evaluate whats working and whats not and develops ongoing plans to better satisfy audience needs.

  • Collaborates to provide all appropriate elements for stories (i.e., Photos, videos and graphics). Captures basic photos and video as needed.
