Role Number: 200265189

Imagine what you could do here! At Apple, outstanding ideas have a way of becoming great products, services, and customer experiences very quickly. Bring passion and dedication to your job and there's no telling what you could accomplish. The Infrastructure Services (IS) Server/Storage Hardware team is responsible for the design and development of our industry-leading, large-scale, server and storage hardware architectures. We build the highest quality, maximum energy efficient and secure designs in the world! As part of this team, we will work with multiple groups to develop, design and test the mechanical and the thermal aspects of scale-out designs to meet Apple's constantly evolving landscape. You will support the creation of systems from concept to production in order to produce the most energy efficient, cost effective, and scalable designs achievable.

Key Qualifications

  • 5+ years of Mechanical/Thermal Engineering experience with design of server, storage and Hyperscale data center infrastructure
  • Experience in the complete server mechanical and thermal development cycle from prototyping to high volume manufacturing
  • Understanding of system level of thermal design focusing on fan and heatsink technology as well as system level thermal control logic
  • Experience with validating designs for mechanical/thermal integrity to include system/rack level shock and vibration, transportation standards and testing, serviceability and usability
  • Experience with the following server design areas: sheet metal design, soft & hard tooling, PCA mechanical design, injection molded plastics, heatsinks, rail-kits and fans
  • Strong Experience designing server in addition to storage systems for Hyperscale data centers ranging from high TDP GPU systems, 2U LFF Based Server/Storage Systems to dense multi-node 2P Intel Servers
  • Experience optimizing server/storage designs for thermal efficiency in high ambient data centers
  • Experience with crafting Hyperscale, rack integrated solutions that can be shipped globally
  • Experience designing dense (90+ HDDs in 4U), spinning hard drive storage solutions and complexities involved - HDD sensitivity to vibration, thermals, serviceability
  • Experience setting up and running the system and the rack level thermal testing in a thermal chamber
  • Understanding of packaging design and testing at a system and rack level
  • Experience in working with remote ODM vendors to create components and assemblies for prototyping
  • Experience with Creo 3D CAD modeling software
  • Experience with Simulation and Finite Element Analysis tools (ANSYS/Icepak/Flotherm)
  • Excellent written and interpersonal skills

The Mechanical/Thermal Engineer is a critical member of the multi-discipline server/storage/infrastructure hardware team. We need you to support the development of the key aspects of existing/future data center systems and infrastructure to understand key sources of operational costs, reduced efficiencies, serviceability challenges, security gaps and safety risks so that they can be addressed. During the concept phase, works closely with other team members to develop mechanical/thermal concepts that align to the overall program goals. Supports the mechanical/thermal design of the system, helping to create the vital specifications and requirements for design partners to implement. Works with the design partner through all phases of the design to ensure design is best in class, cost effective, right-featured, thoroughly tested and highly efficient. Works alongside firmware and validation teams to implement a thermal solution (fan algorithm, sensor location, air ducting, heatsink location, etc) that is tuned to the environmental and thermal requirements of Apple's data centers. Works in tandem with our data center operations' team, security and safety teams to ensure that designs meet or exceed our existing standards and agreements. Works with internal teams and design partners to ensure the new products are effectively transition into the datacenter and large scale deployments. We need you to provide support for emergent issues in existing systems, providing root cause and corrective action.

Education & Experience

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering

Additional Requirements

  • Must be willing to relocate to Austin, TX
  • Familiar with OCP (Open Compute Project)
  • Passionate to support multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced environment
