Reporter /High School Sports
The Middletown Times Herald-Record, part of Gannett Inc. and the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a reporter to cover high school sports. This reporter will join a team committed to serving an audience hungry for increased local sports content. We are looking for a reporter who can produce quality, unique content that will drive readers to the site and lead to subscription sales. The reporter will be expected to report news, create weekly features and analysis for our current and potential subscribers, cover live sporting events and produce enterprise stories and compelling features that provide exceptional storytelling, context and analysis.
Primary focus will be on high school sports.
Be a curious, assertive, flexible and self-starting journalist who jumps to report on breaking news and trending topics with urgency.
Develop sources among athletic directors, coaches, athletes and parents. Give particular attention to developing relationships with these sources in underserved districts to ensure high school sports coverage in diverse, inclusive and equitable.
Be adept at using social media, especially Twitter and Instagram, to generate interest in and promote new content.
Optimize stories for target audience groups using SEO and metrics information.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
At least one year of applicable experience as a reporter/writer.
Proven experience with content management systems and social media channels.
Good time management and organizational skills
Weekend and evening hours are required.
The territory includes Orange and Ulster counties, with some travel into Sullivan, and collaboration with the USA TODAY Networks Hudson Valley team.
A valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
