The City of Visalia's Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) is housed within the Waste Water Division of the Public Works Department and serves the community through collection, treatment and disposal of wastewater. The WRF is designed to provide treatment and disinfection for up to 22.0 million gallons of wastewater per day (mgd). The treatment processes remove greater than 99% of total suspended solids (TSS) and biological oxygen demand (BOD); the regulatory requirement is 85%. Current flows average about 11.5 mgd, which is down from about 12.0 mgd since 2013. This decrease in flow is attributable to conservation efforts by Visalia residents. The divisions staff of operation and maintenance staff are committed to customer service, safety, and providing high-quality services to the Public.
Examples of Duties
The City of Visalia is recruiting for a Maintenance Mechanic. This position will be responsible for maintaining plant equipment, pipelines and structures/grounds. Plant equipment work can include installation and removal of pumps, grinders, UV system, Primary Clarifiers, Aeration Basins, heavy equipment operation, landscaping maintenance and cleanup as needed. In addition, they will perform a wide variety of duties within the Wastewater Maintenance Division including, but not limited to, major and minor repairs of pumps, plant equipment and structure upkeep and maintenance and assist in the Bio-solids division. The Maintenance Mechanic will maintain records and prepare appropriate paperwork, correspondence, records and reports including maintenance logs and work orders.
Qualifications / Requirements
The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with the ability to work independently while staying in communication with their supervisor. This position requires a great deal of proactive thinking, problem solving, organization and safety awareness. Serving as a jack of all trades, it is desirable that the incumbent have a diverse background in maintenance and construction skills including basic plumbing, painting, electrical and carpentry repairs and maintenance. The ideal candidate will be a team player that pays attention to detail and has the ability to develop a thorough understanding of City policies and processes.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skill and ability is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skill and abilities would be:
- One (1) year journey-level experience in the repair and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment such as pumps, motors, valves and engines.
- Possession of a CWEA Grade I Mechanical Technologist Certificate within three (3) testing cycles, or 24 months (whichever comes first).
- Possession of a valid California Driver's License at time of appointment.
