Public Safety Reporter

The Pueblo Chieftain/chieftain.com, an award-winning member of the USA TODAY NETWORK, seeks a high-energy public safety reporter to cover this diverse city of 110,000.

Were looking for a candidate who knows how to ask great questions, dig for stories and moves quickly. The successful candidate has a passion for news of the day, wherever it might be found. Multi-platform fluency is a must.

The candidate must have a digital-first mindset, have video shooting and editing experience and have solid SEO writing knowledge.

Social media should serve as a primary source and outlet for your work. Other sources include police and court records, press releases, scanner traffic, reader and staff news tips, etc.

Pueblo is a melting pot of different cultures, rich in history and tradition. The culture and general assignment reporter will report on Pueblos Hispanic, Black, Asian, Eastern and Western European and Native cultures as well as serve as a general assignment reporter.

Responsibilities:

  • Creates coverage that accurately informs, engages, and entertains specific audiences and platforms using metrics.
  • Use enterprise and daily reporting to report on crime, crime trends, public health and other issues of public safety.
  • Produce solutions-based enterprise stories and will have a nuanced approach to reporting crime and public safety manners.
  • Work with court documents, FOIA requests and be responsible for investigative reporting at times.
  • Uphold the highest standards of journalist integrity and credibility.
  • Provides thoughtful analysis of complex issues.
  • Works toward becoming the communitys leading voice in area of expertise.
  • Serve as a public ambassador for our brand through connecting with the community via social media, on camera, in forums, community leadership, etc.
  • Works with content strategist to evaluate what's working and what's not and develops ongoing plans to better satisfy audience needs.
  • Collaborates with content team to provide all appropriate elements for stories (i.e., photos, videos, and graphics). Captures basic photos and video as needed.
  • Promotes personal brand, the brands of colleagues and the institutional brand.
  • Provides great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's in communications, journalism or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1-2 years of experience preferred.
  • Knows how to use time efficiently in a 24-hour newsroom.
  • Works collaboratively within a cross-functional environment.
  • Experience developing following around personal journalism through use of social media.
  • Strong command of AP grammar and style.
  • Strong copy-editing skills and the ability to produce content that is clean, accurate and "publication ready."
  • Is passionate and enthusiastic about news and content that will work well with audiences on social platforms.
  • Is comfortable using social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat to enhance reporting and promote stories.
  • Understands reporting ethics and sourcing.
  • Excels in a fast-paced news environment and understands the digital first mission.
  • Works weekends and nights as needed.
  • Collaborates well with others and can work with a team on the biggest stories.
  • Ability to fluently speak Spanish is a plus, but not required.
  • Video production skills, social media skills and other multimedia skills are preferred.
  • This role requires a valid drivers license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
