The Oklahoman/oklahoman.com part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking an experienced journalist to lead our visual team.
The Visual Editor will work with the executive editor and other editors to oversee the creation and production of visuals, stills and graphics on various platforms.
The candidate will help formulate a strong visual plan ensuring the visual products enhance the articles. In addition, the editor will ensure visual journalists work is highly visible both in print and online; this includes working with the Planning Editor to ensure visuals are a key element of The Oklahomans social media plans.
This is a senior-level newsroom management that reports to the managing editor. The Oklahoman is Oklahomas largest newspaper and covers the vibrant and growing Oklahoma City metro area with more than 1.4 million residents. Come work with a fun team that loves to commit to great journalism.
- Ongoing conversations with reporters, editors and visual journalists about stories, video and graphics.
- Leading staffers with coaching, feedback, consistent direction.
- Using audience analytics to advise journalists on content-creations plans.
- Assign daily tasks to visual journalists, and ability to assist with those tasks in the field.
- Recognizes future coverage that has high-audience potential and works with other newsroom leaders to craft appropriate visual coverage plans.
- Oversees and maintains equipment as well as necessary contracts and agreements pertaining to visuals.
Bachelor's or masters in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
More than 5 years of visual journalism experience.
Strong communication and collaboration experience.
Advanced knowledge of still photography and videography equipment, with a keen eye toward emerging technology.
Knowledge of Adobe creative suite.
Exceptional core journalism skills (reporting, producing, editing).
Excellent coaching and team-building skills.
Exceptional planning and organizational skills.
Effective communicator; able to get along with diverse personalities.
Able to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
Applies innovative, creative thinking to support the company's goals.
Drone license and experience a plus.
