The Hardware Test Engineering (HWTE) team is looking for an engineer responsible for characterizing, defining calibration, instrumentation, and testing requirements of optical sensors. You will design high precision instrumentation & systems to be able to perform this efficiently in a factory environment. This engineer works closely with the Camera & Depth Hardware group to ensure the success of current and future Apple products. As a Calibration and Instrumentation Engineer, you will:

  • Develop state of the art measurement systems for Apple
  • Introduce cutting edge technology to make lives better around the world
  • Touch every aspect of a system including HW design, SW development, vendor engagement, algorithm optimization, data mining and factory deployment
  • Work collaboratively with a creative, diverse team of engineers including Systems Hardware, Product Design, Reliability, Software, and Operations

    Key Qualifications

    • MS in EE/Physics/Imaging/Optics
    • 3+ years of professional experience
    • Knowledge of optical sensor functionality and implementation
    • Experience in design / implementation of laboratory instrumentation for thevalidation / characterization of optical sensors
    • Ability to work proactively in a collaborative, highly cross-functional and fast pace environment
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and solid teamwork and leadership skills
    • Preferred Skills
    • PhD in EE/Physics/Optics
    • 5+ years of professional experience
    • Understand limitations and design trade-offs between sensor performance, manufacturability, spec, applications and non-ideality of the sensor
    • Experience with fabrication and assembly of optical sensors
    • Experience with commercialized optical sensors, sensor testing and calibration
    • Experience with simulation, modeling, visualization and statistical tools like MATLAB, JMP, Python
    • Experience in optical modeling tools such as Zemax or LightTools
    • Programming skills in C/++/Objective-C
    • Hands-on experience in system-level design
    • High volume consumer electronics manufacturing experience

    Description

    Specification, design, development, and deployment of sensor calibration and performance verification stations for use during Apple new product introduction (NPI). Our systems have to perform at a high level of accuracy and precision in a mass production factory environment. Responsibilities include:

  • R&D around metrology of optical sensors, cameras, and depth systems
  • Model, simulate and experimentally verify sources of instrumentation error, and build uncertainty budgets around what is needed for the product
  • Collaborate with and drive instrument vendors to design equipment from scratch for calibrating and verifying the performance of Apple products
  • Run experiments to analyze performance of instruments under different conditions
  • Generate reports that analyze large amounts of NPI sensor performance data
  • Debug devices from the system level down to the component level
  • Analyze trade-offs among performance, manufacturability and schedule
  • Help with scaling of lab grade instruments to Apple manufacturing lines
  • Define necessary qualification and quality controls for new instrumentation
