The Geosciences Department Technician supports the students and faculty in the department by assisting with field trips, indoor/outdoor laboratory exercises, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting, and building materials for classroom use. For the field assistance, this includes driving of college vehicles, management and organization of an array of field equipment, and making required arrangements for off-campus activities. To support the suite of instrumentation, the technician will manage gas supplies and ordering, perform some routine maintenance and software upgrades, pick-up and organize lab supplies, and troubleshoot instrument problems. To aid in academic instruction, the technician will prepare samples (e.g. thin-sections, tree cores, mineral boxes, water) for analysis and construct demonstration apparatus as required by faculty. Training available for all tasks. Department instrumentation includes a laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometer, ion chromatographs, a scanning electron microscope, and an isotope ratio mass spectrometer. Department is busy and energetic, but friendly. Flexible hours possible.


  • Bachelor's degree in Geosciences or related fields with 3 years relevant experience or Master’s degree in Geosciences preferred. 
  • Qualified candidates will have basic knowledge of geology and instrumentation used in an undergraduate curriculum.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and willingness to assist faculty with outdoor field exercises.
  • Experience with analytical instrument maintenance and troubleshooting, including electrical, vacuum pump, and computer systems are highly desirable.
  • Skills in carpentry/design and thin-section preparation are highly desirable. 
  • Multitasking skills, the ability to balance the needs of many faculty members, and the flexibility to adapt to changing department needs are required. 


  • Coordinate with faculty to prepare/pack required field equipment and/or supplies for field excursions.
  • Drive a field vehicle van and assist with activities for selected exercises.
  • Maintain, order and upgrade field equipment as necessary.
  • Check software on classroom and lab computers and contact ITS for updates and installation; make backups of lab computers.
  • Maintain inventories of gases/supplies for all teaching and research labs. Order gases, and other supplies for the Geosciences Department and distribute to their destinations.
  • Perform routine maintenance of instruments (e.g. change oil, clean cones, arrange for waste disposal).
  • Troubleshoot and repair instrumentation when possible (e.g. electrical, vacuum pump, circuit boards) and/or arrange consultations with appropriate personnel at the college or outside vendors.
  • Maintain online chemical inventory along with safety data sheets and ensure proper use of inventory tracking system.
  • Make polished thin-sections and grain mounts for use in lab exercises and research projects.
  • Repair and maintain rock and mineral sample processing equipment.
  • Prepare specimens (mineral boxes, test kits, fossils) for class exercises.
  • Collaborate with faculty to design and build demonstration apparatus and/or interface with Machine Shop for fabrication.
  • Maintain Geosciences department shop and tool area.
  • Maintain department weather station.
  • Interface with facilities for any repairs and maintenance that are required in geoscience labs or classrooms.
  • Help students and faculty get equipment and samples ready for outreach events, College-sponsored events, and demonstrations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
