Job Summary
The Assistant Director for Community Engagement provides oversight to basic needs, service, volunteer opportunities, and community engagement programming in the Thayne Center. This role supervises professional staff responsible for oversight of various programs including Community Work Study, Community Engagement Leave, SLCC Serves, SLCC Gardens, the Bruin Pantry. Additionally, the Assistant Director manages relationships with Community Partners to support various Thayne Center programs that serve both staff and students. Furthermore, this role will help oversee a growing initiative in basic needs case management. Monitors budgets and provides operational support. This role requires an understanding of emerging equity and social justice concepts and the capacity to apply these concepts throughout departmental programs.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Oversee team members working with the Bruin Pantry, Community Work Study, #SLCCServes, and Community Gardens. Manage contracts with the AmeriCropsVISTA program to maintain part-time support in key areas. Design, implement and analyze assessments and data to inform departmental decision-making pertaining to community engagement initiatives. Provide oversight to staff and programs on multiple campuses.

Initiates and leads communication in partnerships with nonprofit organizations using the Community Partnership Agreement (CPA). Maintains and promotes reciprocal partnerships with established partners by sharing data and managing partner relationships. Represent interests of the partnership program and community partners on campus in committees, presentations, and other settings.

Responsible for creating and/or developing strong working relationships with other Thayne Center team members, partner offices and departments. Review, interpret, and make keen decisions based on institutional priorities, strategic plans, and external review recommendations.

Create and implement a new vision for Basic Needs and case management through the Thayne Center and in collaboration with community resources.

Oversee assigned program budgets and expenditures ensuring responsible budgetary allocation and compliance with all college policies. Approve and enforce related Thayne Center contracts.

Master’s degree in related field including but not limited to: Higher Education Leadership and Policy, Student Personnel, Student Development, Communication, Public Administration, Organizational Behavior, or non-profit leadership.


Strong knowledge of and proven experience with
Supervising staff, performance management
Student Leadership Development theories and practices
Programming development and hosting events
Assessment – designing, implementing and measuring learning outcomes
Diversity, Inclusion, and Multicultural populations – how we can intentionally ensure our work reflects these values
Ability to speak more than one language, especially Spanish
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in related field including but not limited to: Higher Education Leadership and Policy, Student Personnel, Student Development, Communication, Public Administration, Organizational Behavior, or non-profit leadership.

Three (3) to five (5) years full-time paid experience in student life administration, campus programming, community engaged learning, or non-profit management required. Experience in supervising staff and budget management.*

Experience working with diverse students which includes students of color, sexual minorities, students with disabilities, non-traditional students, etc.

Applicant must have scheduling flexibility to accommodate attendance at occasional early mornings, late evenings and weekend program, retreats and conferences.

*Trade off 2:1 in experience/education requirement.

Community engagement and basic needs
Ability to:
Supervision of staff in operational success of multiple, large-scale processes including Community Work study, Community Engagement leave, SLCC Serves, Community Partners and SLCC Gardens.
Develop and communicate a vision for basic needs resources. Supervise and support staff in case management, personnel management, and resource management for basic needs and the Bruin Pantry.
Knowledge of and experience with higher education civic leadership development and community engagement.

Community Partners
Ability to:
Build and maintain strong working relationships with community partners in support of the Thayne Center.
Manage Community Partner Agreements with key constituents, including communication about the agreements with campus partners.
Support and train community partners in sharing engagement opportunities for students.
Collaborate with partner offices in academic affairs and government and community relations.

Contracts and Budget Management
Ability to:
Working knowledge and management of contracts, liability laws and concerns, risk management issues. Submit and manage vendor contracts in a timely manner.
Oversee renewal of Americorp VISTA program.
Ethically and thoroughly oversee budgets connected to community engagement and basic needs initiatives.
Support the payroll and scholarship processes
Uphold responsibilities outlined in the cardholder agreement and purchasing card training.

General
Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backround of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

Non-Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Ability to complete Utah state defensive driving training and drive authorized vehicles.
