The Child and Adolescent Services Research Center (CASRC) is part of the Department of Psychiatry at UC San Diego and physically located at Rady Children's Hospital. CASRC researchers study the implementation of evidence-based practices for children with a range of mental health and developmental problems in community care settings.

The incumbent will serve as a family mental health navigator for autistic patients (ages 4-16 years old) and their families through a family navigation intervention study within the Department of Psychiatry. Primary responsibilities include: obtain training to deliver the family navigation intervention to Spanish and English-speaking families, work closely with pediatric primary care and mental health service professionals to coordinate care, consent family participants, support data collection from families as part of the family navigation delivery, participate in weekly clinical supervision and develop expertise in service systems providing care to autistic children and their families.

  • Six years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus two years of relevant experience working (personally or professionally) with families to support coordination with service systems for autism, mental health, school services, community resources, family advocacy and public benefits.

  • Bilingual. Fluent in English and Spanish.

  • Must have valid California Driver’s License, acceptable driving record, and proof of vehicle insurance.

  • Skills to comprehend and assess patient's grievances to quickly locate appropriate resource for assistance. Working knowledge of the organization and how to get issues resolved. Knowledge of autism and mental health oriented and general community resources.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to complete forms and record data thoroughly and accurately. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

  • Demonstrated experience assisting clients in navigating the health care service system and assist clients in overcoming barriers to accessing care.

  • Acquiring knowledge of Patient Rights & Responsibilities, Joint Commission standards, and Centers for Medicare / Medicaid regulations. Knowledge of Medical Terminology. Knowledge of data collection, compilation, and analytical techniques. Working knowledge of autism, associated diagnostic and treatment services, and ability to provide accurate health information to individuals and groups.

  • Solid interpersonal and customer service skills. Ability to be diplomatic and highly organized. Ability to remain calm under pressure and apply sound judgment. Ability to use good judgment to interpret, clarify and report information to patients, families and staff.

  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, demanding environment. Excellent organization skills to prioritize workload to promptly meet deadlines.

  • Proficiency with Windows-based software including Microsoft word, Excel, Outlook. Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area.

  • Proven ability to provide one-on-one psychosocial support for clients.

  • Ability to maintain compliance with UCSD and participating healthcare system policies and procedures, confidentiality and HIPAA guidelines

  • Demonstrated experience to obtain family input on care delivery.

  • Must be willing to comply with security, health, and safety policies of participating healthcare organizations enrolled in the family navigation study.

  • Experience using electronic health record systems and secure text messaging.

  • Caregiver (parent, family member) of a child or adult with autism or mental health care needs.

  • Demonstrated experience adhering to the family navigation intervention, which includes working with families for up to 4 months or until family action plan goals achieved.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

  • Annual TB test, flu vaccination and background check required to be in accordance with Rady Children’s Hospital health requirements.

  • Must have the teleworking capacity to ability to provide education and training remotely using telehealth delivery.

  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including occasional overtime and evenings/weekends.

  • Daily access to reliable personal transportation to meet families at community locations, clinics, or homes in San Diego.

  • Must be willing to comply with security, health, and safety policies of participating healthcare organizations enrolled in the family navigation study.
