Sports Reporter

The Stockton Record/recordnet.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is searching for a digital-savvy reporter to cover local sports in the northern Central Valley.


This job requires someone who can handle a variety of duties, whether it be writing a high school football game story on deadline or creating a multi-media package about a star collegiate volleyball player.

Our coverage area includes more than 30 high schools, University of the Pacific, the Stockton Ports, single A-affiliate of the Oakland As; the Stockton Kings, G-League affiliate of the Sacramento Kings; and the Stockton Heat, AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames.

This beat will tell stories not only about the games but the people who participate in those games, including athletes, coaches, officials, families and fans. This beat is heavily weighted toward high school sports, where we have most potential to grow audience.

Responsibilities:

  • Report quickly, clearly and accurately and deliver news via stories, video, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or any other methods available to reach our San Joaquin County audience.
  • Use metrics to inform story choices and shape beat strategies.
  • Identify top sports stories of the day, including in-depth features and breaking news on athletes, coaches and teams, rankings, lists, analysis and other story approaches based on analytics and audience potential.
  • Cover sports without relying on gamers take a fresh eye to the beat.
  • Cultivate a beat, knowing the ins/outs of the beat and its key players. Take a genuine interest in people and demonstrate the ability to build trust.
  • Equally adept at writing breaking news stories, enterprise and trending stories and traditional long form features.
  • Write and/or produce multimedia content that appeals to key audience targets and maximizes user experience on digital and social platforms to reach readers where they spend their time and attention.
  • Provide cogent analysis of trends and issues in high school and other sports.
  • Work closely with graphic, photo and video teams to optimize and produce content.
  • Be comfortable hosting videos, Facebook Live appearances, and podcasts.
  • Engage with readers through various social media platforms.
  • Demonstrate strong news judgment informed by real-world experience.
  • Write quick-hit enterprise and trend stories on high-interest sports topics.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or masters in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prefer two years reporting/newsroom experience.
  • Strong command of AP grammar and style.
  • Strong copy-editing skills and the ability to produce content that is clean, accurate and "publication ready."
  • Is passionate and enthusiastic about news and content that will work well with audiences on social platforms.
  • A desire to grow and develop a sports beat.
  • Is comfortable using social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat to enhance reporting and promote stories.
  • Understands reporting ethics and sourcing.
  • Excels in a fast-paced news environment and understands the digital first mission.
  • Collaborates well with others and can work with a team on the biggest stories.
  • This role requires a valid drivers license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check and a motor vehicle record check & drug screen (for driving roles only).
