State Government Political/Watchdog Reporter

The Oklahoman/ part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a strong storyteller and passionate journalist to join our state politics team as a political/watchdog reporter.

This reporter will break news and cover the inner workings of the Oklahoma state house and government agencies that often go overlooked but play an important role in the lives of everyday Oklahomans. We're looking for an experienced watchdog reporter that knows how to follow the money and can track and report on special interests seeking to influence lawmakers and policy makers, whether it's in health, land use, education, energy and any other number of issues.

You must build trust with sources and have an eye for important details buried in government agency agendas, budgets and public records. More importantly, however, the right reporter looks beyond agendas, budgets and political rhetoric to tell how the dealings at the Capitol are impacting communities and quality of life in urban and rural areas of the state.

Oklahoma City is a dynamic community with a vibrant downtown, an NBA basketball team and a thriving restaurant and arts scene, but outside the urban core are also neighborhoods and rural commuities struggling with food deserts, poverty, lagging schools and poor health outcomes.

The right reporter is passionate about telling those stories and holding government, public officials and institutions accountable for addressing the needs of everyone in the state, not just the wealthy and powerful.

This position is funded through a generous two-year grant from the Kirkpatrick Foundation, which has no influence on editorial coverage or decisions.

You should have work samples that demonstrate an aptitude for data-driven stories and familiarity with open records requests, and a track record of producing compelling, timely, well-sourced stories.

In addition, we will ask you to connect with the community not just via social media, but on camera, and through community forums and events.
