Under the supervision of the Wastewater Director, this employee will perform qualitative and quantitative analysis on a variety of wastewater, industrial and plant samples; perform tests, maintain records, and collection system within State regulations and the preventative maintenance inspections (PMI) lift stations according to O/M Manual; and perform related work as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

- Collect samples as directed.
- Perform tests such as PH, Settleable Solids, Dissolved Oxygen, and others as directed.
- Enter testing results into applicable database
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain lab equipment according to State and Federal rules and regulations
- Assist Operations and maintenance Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR), lift stations and wastewater collection/transport system
- Checks collection and transport system to identify and control inflow/infiltration
- Notify Wastewater Director of abnormal results
- Performs maintenance on collection systems as required on buildings, stations, pump houses, around the treatment plant grassed areas; mowing, trimming, grounds upkeep, etc.
- Uses a variety of tools and equipment such as: hand tools, drills, drill presses, pipe cutters, and threaders and voltage meters, operates a motor vehicle, tractor, backhoe, other heavy equipment, and safety equipment.
- Responds promptly to after hour emergency calls including weekends and holidays. Must participate in department on-call rotations.
- Perform such other duties as may from time to time be designated or required by the Board.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of basic computer operating systems and the ability to learn software applications utilized in the operations of SBR systems.
- Knowledge of chemistry and biology theory and concepts.
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment, machinery, tools, and materials.
- Knowledge of data analysis techniques, and chain of custody principles.
- Skill in operating, maneuvering and controlling the actions of applicable laboratory equipment, tools and material.
- Skill interpreting diagrams
- Ability to communicate and interact with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
- May perform heavy manual labor
- Ability to climb stairs and work with chemicals
- Ability to discriminate chemicals and colors during testing procedures.
- Ability to learn, good mechanical aptitude; ability to learn to perform skilled Wastewater Collection and work under varying weather conditions;

- Ability to perform basic mathematical computations rapidly and accurately;
- Ability to respond to and assist with emergency repairs and scheduled work after normal business hours;
- Ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, codes, ordinances, and policies governing the Wastewater Treatment Plant and collections systems
- Ability to operate personal computer including software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, and GIS;
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable those with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
- Work is performed mostly in field settings. Considerable outdoor work is required in the inspections of various land use developments, construction site, or wastewater facilities. The employee occasionally is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibrations.
- While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, walk, talk or hear; use hand to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tool or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
- Employee may be exposed to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, pollen, odors, hydrogen sulfide gas, chlorine gas, methane, gas, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, fumes, hazardous materials, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim light, toxic agents, disease, or pathogenic substances.
- Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of color, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues and signals. The noise level is usually moderate to loud.
- Normal work responsibilities not only require a sighted individual (vision corrected 20/20) for computer usage and visual inspections, but also requires an individual with normal hearing (hearing corrected to normal ranges) for direct and telephone contact with suppliers, employees, and public.
- The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
- Graduate of an accredited high school or GED program
- Must obtain within 3 years a State of Tennessee Grade II Collections Systems Certification
- Must possess a valid drivers license in the State of Tennessee and obtain a Class B commercial drivers license within 24 months.
