The Director of Marketing and Communications will build upon the great progress Point Foundation has made in effective, positive, and multi-faceted communications to take the organization to the next level in public awareness and profile. Elevating the organization’s national profile is a strategic priority for Point and the Director will be integral to achieving this objective.

The Marketing and Communications Director will use all forms of communication to build, maintain and manage the reputation of Point Foundation. Under the direction of the Chief Development Officer, they are responsible for overseeing all external and internal communications including public and media relations, organizational key messages, website, social media channels, collateral content materials and the management of outside consultants.

Founded in 2001, Point Foundation is the nation’s oldest and largest scholarship fund for LGBTQ+ students of merit pursuing their dreams and goals through higher education. Well beyond the tuition and other financial assistance that opens doors otherwise closed to these students, Point Foundation empowers its LGBTQ+ scholars to achieve their full academic and leadership potential despite the obstacles often put before them and go on to make significant impact on society.

Since 2015 Point has significantly expanded its scholarship offerings and number of awards. What began as a single scholarship program that supported exceptional LGBTQ+ students at four-year colleges, universities, or graduate schools, now includes a Community College Scholarship Program, a BIPOC Scholarship initiative, and a portfolio of Opportunity Grants. In addition to tuition, housing, books, and other expenses, Point Foundation’s programs are dedicated to supporting student leaders with mentorship, leadership development opportunities, and a range of conferences and professional and networking interactions to advance their academic and professional pursuits.

Through its people and its programs, Point Foundation is building the next generation of LGBTQ+ leaders, across the country, and in virtually every professional field. Point Scholars are doctors and teachers and artists. They are lawyers and businesspeople and entrepreneurs. They are elected officials, nonprofit executives, scientists, researchers, and more. Leveraging the tools, networks, and benefits of education made possible by Point’s support, Point Alumni can ascend to positions of leadership as openly LGBTQ+ people, and as such are helping create a more accepting, inclusive, and equitable world.


Strategy and Management
-Create and execute on a comprehensive marketing plan, working collaboratively across the organization, to raise public awareness for Point programs, senior leaders, and organization as a whole.
-Guide the development and implementation of Point’s messaging and national voice.
-Manage a crisis communications strategy should the need arise.
-Staff and support the Board Marketing Committee.
-Supervise and mentor the Marketing and Communications Manager.

Media Relations
-Directly oversee the work of a PR consulting firm which will:
-Develop and implement an annual strategic public relations plan, including an editorial calendar to proactively place appropriate stories and key messages in the press.
-Maintain and build relationships with reporters who cover issues pertinent to Point Foundation and serve as a resource and spokesperson where applicable.
-Increase the visibility of the CEO and key senior colleagues through interviews, high-impact media opportunities, and events; prep executives to ensure consistent messaging.
-Monitor, analyze, and report upon media coverage.
-Develop relationships with program staff, scholars, and alums in order to develop meaningful narratives about our work and scholar achievements.

Public Profile
-Lead the Website Working Group to redesign and relaunch
Lead the implementation of a robust inbound marketing system for the website.
-Oversee the consulting firm contracted to redesign and relaunch the website.
-Leverage digital media to increase awareness and scholarship applications.
-In collaboration with Development and Programs, generate timely and appropriate content that integrates social media and website strategy.
-Oversee the development and production of collateral for many purposes, including program brochures, fundraising, and other marketing documents, and ensure compliance for all documents with brand guidelines.
-Support annual galas and other events to help Point further its reach.

Social, Digital and Integrated Marketing
-Ensure social media is an integral component to both PR and integrated marketing efforts.
-Have knowledge of back-end systems to track performance and content management and support staff in best use of these tools.
-As it relates to the performance of the channels and issues related to Point’s goals, identify and manage research needed to improve outcomes.
-Oversee all social media channels and supervise the Marketing and Communications Manager who manages this work. This ranges from approving content, to mapping out the strategy and assessing performance.
-Provide social media support for Development campaigns.
-Management of project timelines for cross-team and cross-departmental projects as designated.
-With development, help to ensure consistent framing of key messages for public campaigns and special initiatives across all communications/marketing platforms.
-Oversee the production of campaign assets (such as Point’s ‘Out in Higher Ed’ campaign) as the lead or in collaboration with other teams.

-Minimum of 5-7 years in marketing and communications
-Familiarity with print and electronic news media
-Strong competency in website and social media success measurements
-Strong competency in website SEO and inbound marketing platforms
-Strong writing skills and a working knowledge of AP writing style
-Relationships with and knowledge of LGBTQ community, related issues, and other LGBTQ organizations
-Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in written format, with varying levels of staff, clients, affiliated organizations, and media
-Excellent writing and editing skills
-College degree (PR, Communication or Journalism preferred)
-Strong communication, organizational, interpersonal, administrative, and managerial skills needed
