The Sacramento Bee is looking for a reporter to cover regional growth and development issues in the vibrant area in and around California’s capital. This beat intersects with multiple complex issues shaping life in Northern California, creating dynamic opportunities for a versatile reporter and writer who wants to make a difference in the community.

Consider the forces affecting life in the Sacramento area: growth, climate change (wildfires, air quality, drought, floods), housing costs, housing shortages, transportation and technology. State and local governments, businesses, developers, planners and activists are all trying to manage change and preserve the quality of life that attracts new residents seeking the California dream, immigrants seeking refuge and a better life, as well as transplants from the Bay Area looking for a new and less expensive frontier. Your job would be to tell these stories that are shaping our region.

As our development reporter, you would craft stories that fall under the canopy of our “Tipping Point” coverage, which includes a range of subjects focused on how life is changing for the 2 million people in our region, what’s working and what isn’t working, and why.

As The Sacramento Bee’s Tipping Point reporter, you would work on a micro and macro level, detailing decisions that are part of the fabric of change here, while connecting the dots to produce larger, in-depth stories that explain what these decisions mean and who is accountable for them.

This reporter needs strong source-building skills and must be able to juggle quick-turn breaking news assignments and high-impact, in-depth stories. A deep understanding of audience is required — these stories should attract strong readership and speak eloquently to those most affected by the rapid changes in our community.  Experience with SEO, visuals and data is also desired, as is the ability to develop well-told stories, experiment with alternative story forms and initiate conversations with our audience. You will work closely with editors in developing and shaping stories, visual components and digital assets to enhance our coverage.

Education: College degree preferred.

Experience: At least three years of reporting experience, preferably on local issues.

Skills needed:

  • Ability to build source networks and bring a constant flow of story ideas.

  • Strong writing and reporting skills.

  • Excellent news judgment and journalism ethics.

  • Ability to work collaboratively to aggressively tackle stories.

  • Comfort with a job that will be demanding, fast-paced and constantly evolving.

  • Ability to understand audience metrics and the tactics that move them.

  • Experience with data, public records and business reports.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, willingness to grow and improve.

  • Must have reliable transportation.  Must have valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance required (at least minimum insurance required for the state in which the employee works).
