Editor/Content Coach

The Mount Shasta Area Newspapers/mtshastanews.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, seeks a dynamic, results-driven editor to lead the newsroom in producing impactful journalism that serves local communities and grows digital audience. The editor will be responsible for two hyper-local weeklies and two websites that have a growing track record of engaging digital readers and reporting breaking news in real time.

The editor will supervise reporters day-to-day activities, act as a mentor and coach, produce print budgets and ensure stories are accurate and meaningful. This role includes reporting as needed, as well as regular work with freelancers and community contributors.

As an editor, you will use metrics and audience research to guide decisions about covering topics and issues that will drive digital audience growth. Youll also directly engage the community in person, through our own products and through social media. This editor will report to the Redding-based Local News Editor and must effectively collaborate with regional digital producers and a centralized print design center. The office is in Mount Shasta, but the successful candidate can live anywhere in southern Siskiyou County and a hybrid work arrangement (splitting time between in-office and working from home) is perfectly acceptable.

The Mount Shasta Area Newspapers and digital products are produced by a small newsroom consisting of an editor and two reporters. Our newspapers have been a pillar of their communities for more than 100 years, since the Gold Rush drew intrepid miners to the area who stayed to work in the timber and railroad industries. We cover a massive area: Siskiyou County in farthest Northern California is 6,347 square miles larger than the state of Connecticut with a population of just over 43,500.

The county is geographically diverse and boasts 14,179-foot Mt. Shasta as well as pristine rivers, forests, agricultural land, meadows, cattle ranches, waterfalls and many small towns that each insist on maintaining their own identity. Outdoor activities are abundant and easy to access, including hiking, biking, climbing, skiing/snowboarding, fishing and hunting. Compared to most of California, the area is very affordable.

Excellent news judgment and editing skills are a must. A successful candidate will embrace the latest developments in video, digital technology and social media and will experiment with innovative approaches to build digital subscribers and social media followers.

This is an ideal position for a roll-up-your-sleeves self-starter who yearns to run a newsroom and likes coaching reporters and knows how to help them elevate their work. The position requires a bachelors degree and three to five years of experience in journalism writing, editing or management roles.

Responsibilities:

  • Help reporters hone skills in a wide range of storytelling: from real-time digital updates to narrative storytelling to investigative reporting, employing alternative story forms and multimedia.
  • Collaborate with senior editors to define strategic priorities and beat structures that deepen engagement with the community and make the most of reporting resources.
  • Use metrics and analytics to increase digital audience and engagement and grow digital subscriptions.
  • Work closely with newsrooms and editors in Redding, Reno, Salem and other nearby USA TODAY Network communities.
  • Serve as an ambassador to the community on The Heralds and the Daily Newss behalf. This may include taking calls and handling concerns from community members and subscribers.
  • Apply innovative, creative thinking to support the companys goals.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or masters in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience in journalism writing, editing or management roles and demonstration of strong editing skills.
  • Solid news judgment.
  • Willingness to be a teacher, not just an editor.
  • Ability to experiment and think creatively.
  • Ability to be a team player who likes to collaborate with coworkers.
  • Top-notch planning, organizational and time management skills.
  • Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct.
  • Understanding of metrics, social media and SEO.
  • Self-motivation and self-direction.
  • Ability to multitask and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
