As a Senior Engineering Manager, you will help define the Observability practice at Apple within Machine Learning Platform Technology, AI/ML and beyond. You will be responsible to build the team and define the program. The Observability team will be responsible for providing tools, frameworks and guidelines to understand our customer experience. Not limited to the behavior of the features, services and infrastructure in our environments. As our application and systems become more sophisticated, our user experience becomes paramount. The focus of this engineering team is observability, which is defined by collecting signal from the client and server and composing a comprehensive tapestry of true user experience. We are building a world class system integration with Siri and our AI/ML stack that is complicated to measure and we will be focussed on deep diving this intricacy for our business partners and developers. The team will be responsible for measuring and identifying areas of engineering focus. We are looking for a seasoned leader who can move between engineering lead to cross functional seer who can identify gaps and bring together teams to focus on improving customer experience and driving results.

Key Qualifications

  • 8+ years of engineering management/leadership experience
  • Prior production large scale experience in Observability Engineering, Telemetry and Metrics platforms
  • Experience with cloud computing services (AWS, GCP) and Kubernetes based deployments
  • Experience with Modern Observability tooling (Prometheus, DataDog, Splunk, Jaeger, Grafana, etc)
  • Track record of cross functional leadership fostering good engineering practices, respect at all levels and inclusivity
  • Proven experience of mentoring and coaching and having a people focussed mindset
  • Experience building, supporting, and maintaining full stack deployments
  • Experience working with and leading globally dispersed teams
  • Strong experience with large complex data ecosystems
  • Proven track record of understanding what matters in a customer experience and able to make hard calls on what technology to pursue


Responsibilities Include: Leading the Observability program in partnership with AI/ML Leaders Defining and driving the Observability roadmap and work across the organization and across functions to deliver quality customer experiences Leading Infrastructure projects that improve Observability tools and platforms: metrics, dashboards, alerting, logging, application performance management, blackbox monitoring, distributed tracing Collaborating with various technical teams to incorporate strong reliability and observability practices in our development life cycle, and mitigate risks to our availability Working with Engineering teams to instrument code to provide rich telemetry and help identify visibility gaps Cultivating positive relationships with executives and peers across the organization to ensure alignment and delivery of a holistic end-to-end user experience Developing tools, dashboards, alerts, and training that quickly arm developers with deeper insights into application performance and service health issues Presenting service performance metrics in executive level review meetings and discuss ongoing efforts to further improve system utilization, customer experience, and engineering efficiency Helping to identify opportunities for improving the processes and culture of the engineering organization across Apple Identifying staffing needs, recruit for, and mentor new and existing engineers

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent software engineering experience
