The USA TODAY Networks Southwest Florida region, which includes the Naples Daily News and the Fort Myers News-Press, is seeking an aggressive criminal justice investigative reporter to break news, expose injustice and champion access to public information in the Sunshine State.

The position is based in Southwest Florida, at the Naples Daily News and The News-Press (Fort Myers), and the reporters first focus will be watchdog stories in this reader-savvy and reader-supported market. This reporter will also have the opportunity to identify investigations that have statewide and national importance. Because of Floridas significance nationally, this reporters investigative work will be supported and amplified by USA TODAYs network of data, graphics, presentation and audience experts.

The successful candidate will have clips that show he or she is passionate about making a difference and holding public officials accountable; has experience in investigative criminal justice reporting and covering law enforcement agencies and courts; demonstrates aggressive public records use and deep source-building; adeptly gathers, organizes and analyzes data; has keen news judgment, and shows both flair and sensitivity in storytelling.

This reporter will be able to work on short, medium, and long-term stories simultaneously and will be an eager and collaborative member of the Southwest Florida team. This reporters skills will be relied on during breaking news events, but the typical work week will be a balance of quick watchdog for short-term enterprise and time for longer, deeper investigations.

The position reports to the Florida investigative editor and works in collaboration with the breaking news/cops & crime editor for Southwest Florida. The reporter will cover for breaking news reporters when they are out, which would include weekend work.

We're open to an experienced investigative reporter or someone with an eye for documents and data who demonstrates sharp news judgment and is motivated to connect readers with information that impacts their communities.

Foreign language proficiency, especially Spanish, is preferred.
