Position description

The Department of Literature at the University of California, San Diego seeks to make a full-time appointment of an Associate Teaching Professor in the fields of Spanish as a Second Language, and Spanish for Heritage Speakers.

The ideal candidate must be able to lead the Spanish language program in the Literature department bridging the gap between language and culture teaching. In addition to coordinating the Spanish language courses of the department, the successful candidate must be a specialist in Spanish for heritage speakers with a strong command of multilingual landscapes and border cultures.

Some of the duties we expect the successful candidate to undertake include:

  • Coordinating and updating a variety of second year content-based classes we already teach (LTSP 2A, 2B, and 2C).
  • Coordinating and updating our LTSP 2D/E classes for heritage speakers/bilingual students.
  • Updating and upgrading all language courses in line with the new methodologies of the Digital Humanities.
  • Raising the profile of Spanish instruction on campus by taking a leadership role.
  • Creating an ambitious community service-learning program in the San Diego/Tijuana region by establishing partnerships with NGO's, businesses, and community organizations that conduct their activities in Spanish.
  • Creating new language courses, such as, Spanish for social workers or health care workers and community organizers to meet the needs of our student population.
  • Teaching methodology courses with an emphasis on bilingual education and border literacies for graduate students in the department.
  • Developing EDI (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) courses on border studies with a focus on the relation between language, identity, and culture.

The ideal candidate will work on expanding the language and culture component of the Spanish program as UCSD moves forward to becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). The candidate will reinforce the institution's crucial commitment to prepare students to meet the needs of the region's growing population of Latinx and Spanish speaking residents, while providing professional training to the students in developing their cultural competency to engage and work with peoples and institutions of Spanish speaking countries.

Salary and level of appointment are based on qualifications and UC pay scale. In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
