Photographer/Visual Journalist

The Oklahoman/ part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is looking for an energetic visual journalist who can cover the captivating stories happening in Oklahoma City and the surrounding region.

Were looking for someone whos comfortable shooting a Friday night football game one day, a Thunder NBA game the next and hitting the road to cover major stories around the region the next.

Are you comfortable working any shift? Do you respond quickly to breaking news? Can you tweet your best shot and video from the scene of a two-story fire? Can you give readers a short video clip of a University of Oklahoma player scoring the winning touchdown? How about a produced feature video? If you can, then this is the place for you.

Giving readers unique visuals with our other award-winning coverage extends across multiple platforms print, online and social media. We value journalists visual storytelling ability.

A wealth of online photo galleries gives our digital audience more chances to see the story as no one else can show it.

This digital journalist should expect to use all visual and interactive storytelling tools available at The Oklahoman. Applicants must have at least three years of daily newspaper or equivalent experience, with photos and video showing versatility of abilities.

You must be able to write accurate copy and captions. You must seek diverse sources and uphold journalistic ethics.

Oklahoma City is a growing community with a vibrant downtown, great restaurants and nightlife and a diverse community, especially in its surrounding neighborhoods. We especially value a visual journalist who can go out and find the stories that often aren't told in communities that media often don't visit.


  • Report clearly and accurately and providing context for our readers.
  • Cultivate visual packages by developing relationships with local communities, especially the underserved. Has a genuine interest in people and ability to build trust.
  • Deliver stories,photos,videos and galleries via stories, video, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or any other methods available to reach our audience.
  • Work with other journalists to collaborate on stories and visuals.
  • Work with editors to evaluate what's working and fix what's not, using metrics to inform story and visual choices, content delivery, and shape coverage strategies.
  • Promote personal brand, the brands of colleagues and the institutional brand.


  • Bachelor's or masters in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year of experience shooting, editing photographs and video stories on deadline.
  • Adept at taking photos and video to file quickly across platforms: mobile, desktop and social media. Understands fast-paced news environment and our digital-first mission.
  • Must be proficient in Photoshop; proficiency with Adobe Premiere Pro and Photo Mechanic is a plus.
  • Strong copyediting skills, command of AP style, and the ability to produce content copy that is clean, accurate and publication ready.
  • Comfortable in fluid, fast-breaking, stressful situations.
  • Successful at collaborating and working well with others and working with a team on projects.
  • Comfortable using social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat to enhance reporting (both on camera and behind) and promote stories.
  • Understands reporting ethics and sourcing.
  • Able to work holidays and weekends as needed.
  • This role requires a valid drivers license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
