Specifically:

  • Housing (focusing on how the rise of student housing, and real estate markets, impact low-income residents and long-term residents)
  • Education's impact (focusing on how cultural changes and changing communities impact K-12 learning, especially on our more diverse communities; the impact of Binghamton University and SUNY Broome on workforce, how it affects makeup of businesses and housing; how recent changes in work culture and opportunities have changed the role of local businesses and economy).
  • Health care (impact of the region's aging community on quality of care, and how it could the access of younger residents still struggling to find adequate cost-effective care).

Based in Binghamton, NY, this position will encompass the culture and experiences in the city, Broome County and sometimes the region, for the Press & Sun-Bulletin and pressconnects.com, part of the USA TODAY Network/Atlantic region.

Reporting should be people-centered and highlight the rich diversity and cultures in the area as well as the needs for our must vulnerable citizens. We welcome narrative reporting told through words and multimedia. Engaging sources and the community through social media will be a useful tool.

An ideal candidate is someone capable of quickly establishing their voice and building a loyal following on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. They will deliver a mix of breaking news, compelling profiles, trend pieces, long-term enterprise, compelling multimedia assets and social engagement.

The journalist will work at times in partnership with USA TODAY reporters and editors throughout New York and the Atlantic region and sometimes beyond


KEY CONSIDERATIONS

  • Strong writing skills and a command of grammar and style.

  • Experience with social media, including Instagram Stories, as a tool to build audience and as a source for beat development.

  • Experience with and interest in multimedia, including video and podcasting.

  • A self-starter who owns the beat yet works collaboratively with others locally and regionally to meet common goals.

  • A journalist committed to values of fairness, diversity, inclusion and professionalism.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.

  • At least two years of applicable experience as a reporter/writer.

  • Proven experience with content management systems and social media channels.

  • Good time management and organizational skills.
