Weekly Hours: 40

Role Number: 200325908

Imagine what you could do here. At Apple, new ideas have a way of becoming extraordinary products very quickly. Bring passion and dedication to your job, and there's no telling what we can accomplish together. We're looking for a hardworking and passionate person to join this amazing team, and if you feel this is you, we'd love to hear from you! Do you love crafting elegant solutions to highly complex challenges? Can you intrinsically see the importance of every detail? Join Apple's cloud infrastructure efforts as a production. You will be key at establishing and implementing the best of Apple cloud technologies within the broader Apple engineering ecosystem. As a production engineer, this position is responsible for working closely with various Apple engineering teams to bring their projects to success using Apple's batch compute infrastructure. This infrastructure runs millions of jobs per day from thousands of Apple engineers across the glove, providing critical compute for the development of nearly every product at Apple.

Key Qualifications

  • Your responsibilities will include learning about all the core components of the batch stack and their work in production, applying this knowledge at helping internal customers run their workloads more efficiently, and first-level diagnosing performance and system issues surfaced by such workloads. This role also includes managing the infrastructure quota system that governs capacity allocation to customers. As the production engineer becomes more experienced, they are expected to develop tools to support the above tasks and to make contributions to the compute stack.
  • The production engineer will be supported by the other engineers in the team. These engineers built and maintain the batch stack all the way from its execution environment up to their customer facing APIs. They can offer not only help by deep knowledge of how all systems work in one of the largest distributed high performance batch compute platforms in the world.

- Experience with running and debugging distributed applications in cloud environments. - Experience with containers and container orchestration. - Familiarity with modern software development processes and best practices. - Hands on ability to code and create proof of concepts. - Fluency in Linux, shell, and Python. - Fluency at least one language popular in infrastructure: Golang, Rust, C++, Java, Python, etc. - Basic notions on distributed systems (e.g., you know what etcd is, what it is used for, and you could write an application that uses it, but you do not fully understand RAFT). *General skills of the Ideal Candidate Include* - Passion about tinkering with systems and software to explore their limits and capabilities and to learn through experimentation. - Fast learner. - Enthusiasm for solving challenging problems. - Ability to record and organize data to solve complex problems.

Education & Experience

BS or MS in Computer Science, or equivalent experience.

Additional Requirements

  • *Additional requirements (ideal to have, but to be learned on the job)*
  • - Fluency at SQL and Golang
  • - Familiar with differential diagnosis.
  • - Proficiency with performing data analysis at scale (because diagnosing a problem, often requires analyzing thousands or millions of occurrences)
  • - Experience with batch cloud or HPC infrastructures and their workloads.
  • - Understanding of batch job scheduling technologies: QoS, fairshare, prioritization, and preemption.
  • - Proficiency on distributed systems (You dream about data fault tolerance, data consistency, and RAFT).
  • - Experience developing and managing a large-scale production system (where a one in a million chance of failure is a daily occurrence).
