USA TODAY is seeking a trending/evergreen reporter who can identify and report on the news that the audience wants to know now but also will be asking about later. This candidate will love using breaking news, Google Trends, social media and other tools to locate story ideas based on what the audience is talking and/or asking about. It could be quick aggregation or SEO play or a more in-depth reported story, but this reporter will have the skills to get the story out while people are still talking about it and optimize it in a way that gives it lasting impact.

The candidate will have reporting experience, strong digital skills and will regularly track the analytics of content and understand when and how to optimize effectively to regain traction in organic search results. They will understand what types of everyday content resonates on Google Discover and be adept at identifying those opportunities. This candidate must also be willing to explore new areas of expertise and help on stories or topics they might not have covered before.

This reporter should understand SEO tools to identify areas of opportunity for USA TODAY and be able to help create and execute a related evergreen content plan. This is a fast-paced job, which requires urgency to get news out quickly and update as needed. This position includes night and weekend hours.

Possibility of remote location or in offices in either NYC, McLean, Va., or Los Angeles

Responsibilities include:

  • Spotting and writing high-interest items ahead of the competition.
  • Optimizing your content, paying special attention to headlines, SEO and fields visible to social audience.
  • Willingness to work a wide range of hours including nights and weekends.
  • Monitor SERP daily and help optimize content both before and after initial publish to help USA TODAY maintain a competitive edge in search.
  • Proficiently use SEO tools to track keywords over time and execute strategies pointed toward those insights


  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or any other subject from an accredited institution
  • Experience covering news in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated strong competitive instincts and intellectual curiosity
  • Proficient in digital publishing, analytics and SEO best practices
  • Ability to think and act tactically and strategically.
  • Proficiency in AP style and grammar.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills.
  • A self-starter who is willing to brainstorm and execute on newsroom strategies
  • A strong willingness to try new things and learn from the results
  • Mastery of SEO and how people discover content on different search platforms
  • Experience with NewsDashboard, Conductor Searchlight or other SEO tools is a plus
