Arizona Editor

The Arizona Republic/, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is building a team to provide deeper coverage of Arizona communities outside metro Phoenix.

We are looking for a talented journalist to lead the three-person team specifically, an editor with deep interest in Arizona who also likes to report and write. This journalist will coach Report for America corps members who will be based in northern Arizona and southern Arizona, respectively, working with them on what news and issues to cover in rural areas and distinct communities. The editor also will write stories about Arizona news and issues.

The first day on the job will be in May 2022. We are seeking a journalist with some knowledge of the 48th state or a willingness to get immersed, fast. We are looking for a versatile editor comfortable with identifying, developing and getting stories published on issues from education to jobs, development, health care, community culture and the environment. Were looking for a natural teacher who can share knowledge and coach emerging journalists both in person and remotely.

Stories from this team would be shared with other Arizona-based publications. The editor would be responsible for connecting with other Republic editors on coverage plans and communicating and distributing a news budget to other publications to ensure stories reach the largest audience possible.

This is a grant-funded initiative, as are the positions of the RFA corps members.


  • Uses source development, data and document reporting and strategic thinking to identify key issues.
  • Offers independent, innovative thinking in shaping coverage of those issues.
  • Works with team to develop exclusive content that is complete, authoritative, interesting and shareable.
  • Provides context to breaking news.
  • Focuses coverage to grow audience among communities that we may not regularly reach.
  • Uses metrics to gauge audience interests and works to develop coverage plans to better satisfy audience needs.
  • Acts as a public ambassador through community outreach and responds and connects with readers.
  • Nurtures a diverse, skilled staff and elevates their skills through coaching and training.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of and adherence to the highest journalistic ethical standards.


  • Bachelor's or masters degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Journalism management experience.
  • Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct.
  • Sharp news judgment.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Self-motivation and self-direction.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to get along with diverse personalities.
