We are seeking an Advanced Manufacturing Engineer to bring our team's automation, controls, and mechatronics knowledge and innovation initiatives to the next level! In this role you will be responsible for designing precision assembly and measurement processes for Apple products. Perform the research and development on new technologies necessary to tackle complex assembly and automation problems that have direct impact to the quality and delivery of Apple products. Design, implement and successfully scale automated and semi- automated solutions based upon sound engineering principles and the technologies developed for a specific application. Use your leadership skills for direction and mentorship to third party machine/automation suppliers and/or CM's; be the driver on owned projects; serve as a technical resource to other engineering groups and project leaders.

Key Qualifications

  • Extensive work experience in designing precision assembly, inspection and automation equipment with a hands-on mechatronics design background
  • Experience in creating technical specifications for automated manufacturing equipment, machine qualification requirements, design of experiments and failure analysis
  • Understands machine qualification including calibration, correlation, capability, repeatability and reproducibility
  • Direct experience in design, integration and validation of controls (electromechanical/ mechatronic systems) in high volume automated process equipment for high precision assembly, test or metrology
  • Direct experience developing and troubleshooting complex embedded systems (PLC and and PC-based)
  • Expertise in motion control: specifying, integrating and tuning a broad range of systems including high-speed servos, robotics, transducers, and machine vision
  • SW expertise in PLC coding and C (embedded systems) and direct experience with HMI or user-facing application software.
  • Proficiency selecting appropriate sensors, VFD, servo systems circuit protectors, safety hardware, PLC hardware, and remote I/O
  • Expertise in the design of machine safety circuits and programming of safety PLCs
  • Experience in designing controls hardware infrastructures (Field bus Networks, Serial communication between PLCs and instruments and Ethernet communications between machine PLCs and database systems
  • Exposure to a wide variety of production machinery, industrial sensors, and equipment (LVDT and pressure transducers, dispense systems, temperature controllers, etc)
  • Ability to analyze and select new software platforms to support Industry 4.0 manufacturing.
  • Able to communicate effectively in a worldwide environment


As our team's controls expert, you will develop new and or improved processes through the application of theoretical and practical engineering. Design and build out factory level, and line/machine level controls standards and specification for application by internal equipment development team and external partners. Create data management and tracking communications network architecture and collaborate with cross-functional teams for product, processes and quality traceability control implementation.

  • Organize cross-functional reviews of the machine requirements, design, qualification and capability
  • Create Request for Quotation/Proposal (RFQ/RFPs) that documents the design requirements of the automated equipment, delivery schedule, required documentation and qualification for acceptance at machine supplier facility and contract manufacturer's factory
  • Engage machine suppliers for automated equipment design reviews and proposals
  • Ability to travel internationally 30-40% once it resumes
  • Travel to the machine supplier and contract manufacturer for equipment bring-up, qualification, acceptance testing and support during build events
  • Run equipment experiments to bound the capability of the machine
  • Responsible for data analysis reports to communicate machine capability to the multi-functional teams Performs assignments in several of the following manufacturing engineering functions:
  • Design for Manufacturability - Provide early and on going manufacturing involvement to ensure new products are mechanically manufacturable.
  • Product Engineering - Works all phases of a product from concept to repeat manufacturing to end of life. Provides production support engineering with respect to technically complex testing methods, procedures and failure analysis.
  • Process Engineering - Designs and develops technically complex processes to improve quality and efficiency. Utilize statistical tools (such as GR&R, SPC and Cp/pCk) to ensure processes/fixtures are scalable and are continuing to perform properly once qualified.
  • Failure/Data Analysis - Plans, develops and implements technically complex procedures for the testing and evaluation of soon to be released products. Specifies test to be performed, compiles data and makes recommendations for product design changes and final assembly standards. This will include the use of Design of Experiments (DOE) and statistical analysis using Six Sigma principles.

    Education & Experience

    BSME or equivalent (MSME desired), with 10+ plus years in an engineering role with 5 years of experience in controls systems for automation equipment used for assembly and/or inspection/measurement of components.

    Additional Requirements

    • Ability to architect, write and debug PLC ladder logic/IPC SW with an emphasis on generating code that is organized, structured, documented, maintainable and reusable. PLC/IPC code will interact with subsystems such as conveyors, robots, Manufacturing Execution System (MES), LabView, machine vision, and 3rd party equipment
    • Implement (ANSI/ RIA15.06/OSHA compliant) control reliable safety systems for safeguarding robots, gantries, conveyors, and other high volume manufacturing equipment
    • Generate aesthetically simple HMI screens for complex machinery while providing sufficient feedback for troubleshooting
    • Ability to use 3D CAD packages such as: SolidWorks NX, CAD or ProE a plus
    • Working knowledge of GD&T principles favorable
    • Experience with Labview/Matlab and/or Python/Java would be a plus
    • Knowledge of production quality metrics preferred: JMP, Minitab & Six Sigma
