The Public Health Foundation (PHF), a national 501(c)3 organization dedicated to improving public health and population health practice to support healthier communities, seeks an experienced financial professional to serve as PHF’s Controller. The Controller is essential in our organization, serving as the lead accountant. This position is responsible for all day-to-day accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, contracts administration, and payroll.

 

As the Controller, you will report to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and collaborate with PHF's Executive team on organizational strategy and financial operations, including discussions with the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors. You will manage all financial operations, from setting and enforcing accounting policies to overseeing financial infrastructure and preparing the annual audit. You will be expected to mitigate financial risks and ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). You will be supported by an Accounting Manager and play a key role in maintaining the accuracy of financial records and internal and external reporting. This is a hybrid role, and you must live locally the DMV,  to be in the office at least three days a week.

 

To succeed, you should have:

  • At least 7 years of accounting/financial management experience in a non-profit organization, a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and extensive knowledge of GAAP/FASB requirements; Advanced degree or CPA preferred.
  • Proficiency in MIP or similar accounting software, advanced Excel capabilities, experience with accounting codes, general ledger account management, account reconciliation, and preparation of financial statements.
  • Experience with Federal government contracts, GSA schedules, developing budgets, government cooperative agreements, and monthly reporting for non-profit organizations; Experience with GSA schedules is a bonus.
  • Proven success in building and implementing internal controls, maintaining high standards of confidentiality, reliability, and integrity, along with demonstrated consistent attendance and customer service attitude.

 

Your responsibilities as the Controller will include:

  • Oversee Financial Operations: Establish and manage accounting and financial functions, including accounts payable/receivable, general ledger, payroll, banking, and cash flow forecasting, while ensuring compliance with GAAP.
  • Ensure Regulatory Compliance: Handle financial transactions to meet funding contract terms and conditions, and federal and state regulations, including annual charitable organization registration and quarterly and annual tax filings.
  • Produce Financial Reports: Create and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, including specialized ad hoc reports, and manage the financial budgeting and forecasting process to meet organizational strategies.
  • Lead Audits and Vendor Relationships: Prepare work papers and supervise the annual audit process, serve as the primary liaison with vendors, banks, and regulatory agencies, and manage PHF's GSA Schedule Contract compliance and reporting.
  • Maintain Financial Systems and Policies: Oversee technology systems related to accounting/payroll/401(k), ensure adherence to procurement, travel, and company-wide policies, and maintain all accounting and payroll records.

 

Benefits:
