Javier Valerio, studying Computer Science, is a LatPro Scholarship Finalist

javiervalerio_2[I] am currently majoring in Computer Science. One of my biggest priorities in life has always been education. Since I was a child, I have had a particular interest in computers and technology. Since then, nothing has changed. I remember that whenever my family’s computer broke, I would eagerly repair and reinstall all the software again. In fact, when I installed the CD burner in the PC for the first time by myself, I realized that dealing with computers was all I wanted to pursue as a career. These days, technology is becoming essential to every field and occupation imaginable. I strongly believe that with the pace technology is moving at, it will continue our lifestyle up to a point where everything will be accessible by everyone, anywhere.

I have been always brought up with the idea that in order to achieve my goals and overcome any obstacles, I must work hard and with determination and perseverance, results will follow. There are no words that would describe how grateful I am for having such a wonderful family. If it was not for my family’s sacrifice, I would not be pursuing the dream of studying here. Since I was in elementary school, I have been an excellent student who puts education as main priority. I continue giving my best on college, not only aiming for top grades but also leaving college with a real, rich education.

However, it takes more than being a good student to continue furthering an education. Tuition and expenses for international students are big words. My case is not the exception. As an international student, I cannot opt for financial aid in the United States and neither can I apply for most scholarships because the majority of them require citizenship and/or residency. I only have two more semesters left at MiraCosta College and after that, I am going to have to transfer. My family can’t continue affording my education and so, I am not sure if I will continue studying in the United States. My mother is a homemaker and my father a retired accountant. Most of my father’s savings are now gone in these three semester tuition at MiraCosta. Even though I give the best out of me and my main priority is to succeed in life, I am just a student with big monetary difficulties who seeks aid for shaping his future.

Obtaining an education is a one-lifetime opportunity that I definitely don’t want to miss. Graduating in Computer Science is everything I have dreamed of. I want to be part of something bigger than myself capable of changing the world through the use of computers and technology. Not only will this degree reflect my enthusiasm, hard work, and perseverance, but it will also represent a significant achievement for myself and my family.
