Kaneilia Williams‘s Essay:

How did you choose your major? What obstacles have you had to overcome and what will it mean to you to graduate with this degree?

I chose my major because I was always interested in numbers and how businesses worked. I am a woman who has faced both economic and personal hardships while seeking to further my education in efforts to improve my employment status and provide a better life for my family. Personally, I have been affected by my mother’s drug abuse, which spiraled out of control in 1998, and the death of my grandmother. I was a sophomore in high school when she was unable to maintain her drug usage, maintain a job, and take care of myself and my three siblings.

Economically, my family is currently experiencing hardship due to the weak job market. I have three children and a husband who depend on me as the primary wage earner for our family as my husband, who has been unemployed for the past three years, is currently looking for employment. My husband received his associates degree earlier this year, but still has not been able to find work. There are many times when I have to decide between paying for things my family needs or buying gas to travel to work. My transportation expenses are high because I travel 100 miles round trip to and from work each day because there are few jobs in the town I live in. I provide food, clothing, and shelter for my family without the assistance of governmental programs. I also help support my mother with necessities anytime I can because she does not have a job and is still battling her addiction.

My personal and economic hardships influenced my decision to further my education in pursuit of a Masters in Business Administration. I am trying my best to provide a better environment for my children to grow up in than I received as a child. Gaining additional education and training and improving my employment status are the only ways I can overcome the economic hardship. My MBA will prepare me for advancement in the finance and/or health care industries and reward me with the financial ability to secure a promising future for my family.

My level of dedication to my family, job, education is very high because I always seek to contribute successfully to the lives others. When given the opportunity to learn new things, I am able to quickly absorb information and adapt to new processes. I am a knowledge-hungry self starter who is committed to improving my status by continuing to further my education. When difficult processes or problems arise, I look to develop procedures to eliminate these types of occurrences. I feel that my dedication to my education and perseverance throughout all of my obstacles proves that I am very deserving of this award.

  • Understanding that your story mirrors that of many Americans near and far, your plight for educational advancement is honorable. The current economic status of the United States is very volatile, it is my hopes that you will gain help from your husband because being a sole-provider for three children is hard enough without having to take care of another adult. I pray for you strength, peace and stability as you continue your plight for future success.
