Felipe Kosareff‘s Essay:

How did you choose your major? What obstacles have you had to overcome and what will it mean to you to graduate with this degree?

As a child, I always wondered how things worked. I wondered why water moves in a certain way when it barely comes out of the faucet; I wondered why there were white dots in the dark sky; I wondered why insects have six legs. When a person is young, one cannot help but wonder how certain things work the way they do. As I was growing up, I was really interested in the mysteries of space. I would ask people, my parents mostly, what was in space. They would respond with simple answers such as there are stars, planets, comets and asteroids. This would suffice for only a while and then curiosity would arise again; “Is there more?” I would wonder.

Through my life, problems arose out of the deep and impacted me in different ways. These problems were all personal and made a small dent in my life which skewed me in the wrong direction for a few years. With some talks, I finally made it back on track with my social life and my academic life. At the end of middle school, I found that I loved mathematics. Although I was not the best at it, I found that the more complex the problem was, the more I would try to figure it out. This led to a satisfying math life in high school. Although I had a passion for math and certain other subjects, my family had no way of making life easy for me financially. This meant that clothes were all used and old, there was no computer access for me, and food was scarce in our household. To try and overcome this, my mother worked double shifts, six days out of the week to make a dent in the life we had. At the start of my senior year, I took a job with my mom and I was finally able to help out and make our life a little easier.

After graduating, I took some time off to work full time and help stabilize us for a while before I went back to school. Upon returning, I still did not know what I wanted to do with my life. All I knew I wanted was something to do with math. So, I started there. I took advanced math courses and juggled around different kinds of majors: Computer science, Biology, Mathematics, engineering and several others. Finally, after approximately two years into college, I remembered me in my ninth grade physical science class. I remembered ignoring my teacher and flipping to the back of the book to read up on stars, planets, black holes, dark matter and energy. All of a sudden, an epiphany came to me. I had no idea what one was until it hit me.

It was amazing; a sudden realization of a something, which is what I thought at that moment. I looked up astronomy and came across Astrophysics. There it was; there was actually a career that I would enjoy. Here was a career that I would spend endless nights looking at the sky and trying to figure out how space works; a career that makes me a simple man trying to understand the vastness of the universe, something that we as humans are incapable of beginning to comprehend. I thought this and found that I did not want to do this half way. If I was going to go through with this, I would have to do it all the way. I promised myself that I would try and make sure to achieve a PhD in Astrophysics.

Up to this point, the classes are difficult and they are only going to get even more difficult, marking this only the beginning of a long and fruit-filled journey. If I were to complete this long journey, I would make many people proud. I would be the first in my family to finish school all the way. With this achievement, I hope to find that all the sacrifices my family has made throughout my life are not in vain. I hope that everything that my mom and step-father have done for me will be worth it in the end.
