Job Summary

Under general supervision from the lab manager, provide technical support and organizational assistance in the operation of the laboratory, greenhouse and field research activities. Perform basic laboratory duties in Plant pathology. Help process plant samples for disease diagnostic using cultural methods. Prepare standardized media, reagents and solutions from formulas for research use; set up simple laboratory experiments; prepare bacterial and fungal suspension; run routine PCR analysis; maintain greenhouse plants; wash, wrap and sterilize glassware, equipment and/or instruments; fill, label and distribute media and may in addition keep laboratory facilities clean and sanitary.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Stand at lab/greenhouse benches and process plant and soil sample for prolonged periods of time.
  • Work under dusty conditions.
  • Stand hot conditions in the field. Lift materials weighing up to 30 lbs.
  • Work with protective equipment for pesticide or biological applications (i.e.; pesticide respirator, protective clothing, goggles, etc.).
  • Work in proximity of all kinds of plant materials, pollens and chemicals.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Theoretical background in Biological Sciences or related scientific discipline such as Microbiology.
  • Experience working in lab setting, fields, and greenhouses.
  • Experience collecting and processing plant samples
  • Experience recording and entering data.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)

  • Skills for common laboratory practices.
  • Abilities to work in the field.

Preferred:

Preferred Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Science/Biology.
  • Experience working with plants, fungi and microorganisms.
  • Experience with concepts, principles, and practice of plant pathology, molecular biology or related fields.
