The Ledger in Lakeland, FL (theledger.com) part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is looking for a self-motivated writer to become the recognized voice reporting on the diverse and rapidly evolving culture that makes Polk County a special place to live, work and play. The candidate chosen to fill this position will be called upon to embed themselves in the different communities around the county and report on entertainment, dining, arts and cultural aspects that make them unique and impact residents quality of life.
Polk County, in the heart of Central Florida, is undergoing explosive growth in areas of community development, business, jobs, events and recreation, to name a few. The ideal candidate is not only a storyteller, but someone who is not afraid to dig and ask the tough questions to get to the heart of an issue to be delivered to readers in a way that will resonate across Polks cultural spectrum.
This reporter must be able to tell stories across multiple platforms, using digital tools such as video, audio and social to narrate their stories. The candidate should be adept at source development, have experience using public records, databases and other digital-focused tools; bring a rock-solid knowledge of AP style; and demonstrate a proven ability to meet daily and long-range deadlines. The position covers the entire county and will require travel throughout Polk and occasionally the outskirts. Previous feature writing and reporting and at least three years of experience at a daily newspaper or equivalent media are preferred. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
